Not only is it dangerous to be outside walking when the weather conditions are icy, it is also dangerous to be driving in icy conditions. We see more accidents happening around the first snow fall or during snowy, slippery conditions in the wintertime. This leads to accidents and inevitably injuries from those accidents.
Here are a few tips from AAA to help keep you safe this season:
- Know your brakes and don’t stop if you can avoid it. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until the traffic light changes, do so.
- Don’t power going up hills. This will cause your tires to spin on snow-covered roads. As you reach the top of the hill, reduce speed slowly.
- Increase following distance to eight to ten seconds instead of the dry road conditions of three to four seconds. You have a less likely chance of rear-ending the person in front of you with more distance between vehicles if a quick brake tap takes place.
